Pentecost Sunday, celebrated last week, is a very old Church festival. Trinity Sunday, however, did not come into existence till the early 1300’s. Rather new on the block, but it is edifying. On the eighth day from Pentecost, the Church established a bridge Sunday between the two halves of the Church Year. The first half of the liturgical church year is based upon the life of Christ. That is, starting with Advent, then Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost, we walked again with Jesus through the events of His life.

Concerning the second half of the Church year, Dr. Luther Reed wrote: “Coming at the conclusion of the historic celebrations, Trinity Sunday, the octave of Pentecost, provides a fitting climax to the first half of the year and lends a dogmatic foundation for the Sundays in the second half with their messages concerning the teaching of our Lord as exemplified in the life of the church. [He also adds that for Trinity Sunday] …The vestments are white in recognition of the holiness and glory of the Godhead.”
