Sermon
Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:
“Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” This is the question John the Baptist sends with his disciples to Jesus in our Gospel reading for this week. We might well understand John’s apprehension. While he was the prophet from God sent to prepare the way for the Messiah, John was sitting in prison awaiting his likely execution… and there had been so many false alarms throughout the Old Testament that God’s Chosen One had finally arrived to deliver His people.
We don’t know for sure whether John sent his disciples with this question because he himself was having doubts, or whether perhaps he thought these disciples needed to hear the truth from Jesus Himself. But the answer Jesus gives them should give all of us comfort and certainty: Jesus is the One we’ve been waiting for!
