And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. (Luke 9:29)

HYMNS FOR THE WEEK

the transfiguration of our lord

Sermon

Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:

The three-year lectionary that guides our selection of readings for each week of the church year places the celebration of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ right after the end of the Epiphany season and before the beginning of Lent. This is extraordinarily appropriate, and it’s worth considering how the Transfiguration suddenly turns our focus in the church year to our preparation for Holy Week, now only six weeks away.

As the end of Epiphany, the Transfiguration provides one final, compelling piece of evidence of Jesus’ true identity: God Himself living among us. We see Him shine in glory, in the company of Moses and Elijah as a powerful proof that He is the fulfillment of the Law, as well as the One the prophets foretold. But as the beginning of Lent, we know that we cannot dwell on this mountain and bask in the glory of God-come-in-human-flesh. He has come for a purpose, and He will soon turn His face to Jerusalem to complete His holy work.

For us, too, it is time to set aside our alleluias and our marveling at the dazzling miracles of our Savior, at least for a time. We, too, turn our faces toward Jerusalem to witness what is about to occur there…
