third sunday after the epiphany

Sermon

Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:

The Epiphany season continues with the story of Jesus preaching in His hometown of Nazareth. At first, we might rejoice with the people assembled in the synagogue as Jesus reads from the prophecies of Isaiah and declares that the text He has just read has been fulfilled at that very moment. But things take a sudden turn for the worse when Jesus does not perform any of the miraculous healings they had heard about Him performing in other towns. Why does the crowd turn so quickly from marvelling at Jesus’ wisdom to enraged at His refusal to perform miracles? And why should this story further comfort us that Jesus has truly come to save us?
