Sermon
Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:
Our Old Testament and Gospel readings for this week confront us with a topic that may be uncomfortable for Christians today to tackle head-on: God’s design for marriage and the tragedy of divorce. We may be confused by Moses’ permission for a man of Israel to divorce his wife as long as he provided her with a certificate of divorce. We may feel guilt at having our own marriages fail, or react that Jesus’ declaration that remarriage is equivalent to adultery is a little too harsh. We may wonder how to provide comfort for those who have been affected by divorce among our friends and family.
But as we think through these issues, we should also keep in mind a stunning truth about the Word of God: Marriage is so often used throughout the Bible to depict the relationship we are designed to have with our Creator, and the permanence of the institution of marriage that God had declared reflects His perfect faithfulness to us. No matter how much we may fail or flee from Him, and no matter what difficulties we encounter in this life, God loves us and is willing even to die for us so that we may remain united with Him for eternity!
